Daily sudoku

Pick a level anywhere else in this wing and you have chosen your own difficulty. Here the date chooses, and the grid it picks is the same one every other player gets today.

The same grid for everyone

Today's board is generated from today's date. That is the whole mechanism: our generator is deterministic, so two strangers asking on the same day get the same puzzle without any account, any server or any waiting. The difficulty is the date's rather than yours, and the week climbs the way a newspaper's does, gentle at the start and hardest at the weekend.

The leaderboard ranks how cleanly you solved it

Not how fast. Every sudoku leaderboard in existence is a stopwatch, and a stopwatch turns thinking into a cost โ€” which is exactly wrong for a puzzle whose whole pleasure is taking your time over it. A clean solve is worth a thousand. Each visible mistake costs a hundred, each step of a hint costs fifty, and both are choices you can see yourself making. Sit and stare for an hour and it costs you nothing.

Which level each day of the week lands on

The curve is not a mood. It is a seven slot array the generator reads by weekday, holding the same seven values for a player's first grid and their five hundredth, so the day of the week decides the level completely before anyone opens anything.

DayLevelWhat it asks for
Sunday Expert Goes past the standard techniques. Take your time.
Monday Easy Scan the boxes. No pencil marks needed.
Tuesday Easy Scan the boxes. No pencil marks needed.
Wednesday Medium Pencil marks start to pay off.
Thursday Medium Pencil marks start to pay off.
Friday Hard Needs a pair or a locked digit.
Saturday Hard Needs a pair or a locked digit.

Knowing which technique a grid turns on before you ask for help is the cheapest way to protect a daily score: each of the six has a page with a worked example under sudoku techniques, and how to play covers the rules and the hint ladder if the vocabulary is new. Tomorrow the date picks again, and four mornings in seven it picks a different level as well.
